Description
LEGO® Batman™: Legacy of the Dark Knight is a mobile action-puzzle game set in a brick-built Gotham. You switch between Batman and his allies to solve environmental puzzles, fight thugs, and explore the streets between missions. Version 1.18.0 expands the free-roam map and adds daily challenges, making the game feel less like a linear story and more like a collectathon.
Free-roam Gotham in LEGO® Batman™: Legacy of the Dark Knight
I spent most of my first session ignoring the mission marker. The streets contain hidden LEGO studs, breakable objects, and small rooftop paths that reward checking every block. It is not a massive open world in the console sense; the map is split into connected zones with some locked shortcuts. That keeps the mobile game manageable, but the invisible walls on some rooftops still break the mood.
Another thing that stands out is how vehicle chases use the environment. When the Batmobile starts to feel repetitive, you can trigger bridge cranes or falling debris to slow down pursuing cars. That creates gaps without forcing you to drive at full speed constantly. The touch steering is still a bit sensitive in narrow alleys, so these environmental tricks are often safer than a clean turn.
Combat, stealth, and the timing problems
Melee fights are straightforward: build a combo, then perform a finisher. The update tightens the animation timing, so chaining attacks against thugs feels more reliable than in earlier builds. But the stealth sections are a different story. Enemy vision cones are unforgiving, and missing a smoke bomb throw usually means restarting the room. The enhanced grapple hook helps you escape after a mistake, though it sometimes targets the wrong ledge.
Switching characters is the core puzzle mechanic. Certain puzzles require a specific hero’s ability, so you cannot just punch your way through. In LEGO® Batman™: Legacy of the Dark Knight, that quick swap can be awkward because the character icons sit close together on screen. On a tablet it is fine; on a small phone, I routinely tapped the wrong teammate during a boss fight.
Daily challenges and the value of studs
Studs are more than collectibles. They unlock upgrade slots and extra content, and v1.18.0 gives you a practical reason to keep looking for them. Daily challenges appear after progressing through the opening chapters, and they reward rare skins and bonus studs for simple tasks like finishing a pursuit without damage or clearing a room under a time limit. I enjoy these for fifteen-minute sessions, but some repeat too often.
The grind also appears in the challenge design. One daily asked me to replay an old mission with a different character, which was interesting the first time and tedious by the third. Still, these tasks nudge you toward exploring parts of Gotham you normally ignore. That is smarter than forcing you to redo the story, but it does not fully hide the repetition.
Who should play this or skip it
If you like collectathon-style mobile games and you accept that the camera will sometimes fight you, LEGO® Batman™: Legacy of the Dark Knight offers a more complete mobile Batman experience than most linear action games. If you only care about precise stealth and deep combat, you will probably feel limited by the controls. The best version of this game lives somewhere in between: half puzzle exploration, half brawler, with enough charm to keep you opening the app daily.
